It is difficult for adults to wear bicycle helmets. (I wrote this article on my blog 16 years ago).
The reason has nothing to do with comfort or safety. It is related to the signal.
Semiotics is the science of flags, signals and other communications. It studies the behavior of a person (or someone) based on limited information when looking for the information behind the signal. All of these behaviors are to seek a sense of belonging and social status.
Masks are more telling than helmets.
Ten years ago, if you wore a mask at work, you were either a surgeon, a carpenter, or a bank robber.
As masks began to spread (mainly in parts of Asia), some people who did not wear masks believed that such masks were either a generous act (people who wear masks did not want to infect others) or were a bit paranoid.
Then, when the flu pandemic first arrived in the United States, masks became the focus of hoarding. Just like toilet paper, this is a way to sacrifice time and money in exchange for scarce and reassuring things. People are not reading scientific journals, but understanding. This hoarding behavior has an unfortunate side effect, which is that the first-line medical staff who need masks can not access the masks. It also creates a false sense of security because many people who use them do not know how to use them correctly, which makes them worse than the situation without them at all.
If you wear a mask while shopping on the street in early March 2020, this may not improve your social status.
Then, as some newspapers changed their positions, self-made masks began to appear, and the story changed again-it is worth noting that even fast fashion has never changed so fast.
